Unimutual Ltd is an Australian discretionary mutual that specialises in providing a cost-effective alternative to insurance for universities, research institutes and university colleges. It was established following a market failure in liability insurance. Australian universities were left without adequate or affordable liability insurance cover for their often sensitive and expensive research work as well as their student clubs and associated activities. Through the innovative work of Regis the solution the universities found was to manage their risk through pooling in a mutual.

Unimutual has a high reputation within the university sector for being attuned to the needs of the universities. It has also acquired an excellent reputation for claims handling. Its attitude is how can we help, how can we resolve the issues and what works best for the mutual and the member. The strong partnership between the Board and Regis means the Mutual is focused on the customer and there is a great level of openness and trust.

The Retail Mutual
We could see the benefits of pooling our resources

The Retail Mutual was established as The NFRN Mutual in 1999 when the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) approached Regis in search of a better insurance solution for their members. Fed up with high premiums and a lack of choice in the market, newsagents welcomed the new alternative. It offered them better group buying leverage, a more sympathetic approach to the handling of their claims and a sense of community that united independent retailers.

The NFRN Mutual had long been a first port of call for high-street news retailers looking for competitive cover. But with many of these businesses now expanding into the convenience sector, and retailers in other sectors keen to enjoy the benefits of a mutual, the team realised it was time to redesign its offering. Thus in 2016 The Retail Mutual was born. Whilst remaining loyal to its core membership of news retailers, The Retail Mutual now provides cover to a diverse range of businesses, from pubs and post offices to farm shops and florists with many more in between.
As the competition gets stronger, many independent retailers these days are looking for innovative ways to save money or boost their income. The Retail Mutual continues to grow it’s offering in response to the needs of our Members.

Activities Industry Mutual
An established mutual, responding to a changing market

The Activities Industry Mutual (AIM) has been providing cover for the outdoor activity sector for over 10 years. 

It has grown from small beginnings to become one of the market leading providers in the sector with over 750 clients (or Members) and an annual income in excess of £2.3M. Owned by its Members, it provides cover for both organisations and individuals providing activities ranging from water sports and cycling to climbing and coasteering.

The last 10 years has seen a period of structural change for the outdoor sector and the role of AIM has evolved within this changing environment. There have been significant changes in both the scope of providers and their approach to safety management.

AIM has also seen a number of new areas of development beyond traditional outdoor centres including indoor climbing, canyoning, coasteering and downhill mountain biking. Schools have become increasingly risk averse during this period. AIM has helped operators face these challenges by supporting a professional approach to safety management amongst its members.

In addition to this there is a more obvious financial benefit for long term Members in terms of the potential for rebates. Having been established for over 10 years, AIM is now able to look back at previous years and, where possible, provides a distribution of surplus on contributions paid. This is unique to a mutual and a reflection on the good safety and claims record of AIM members.

The Military Mutual

The Military Mutual was created by military people to support the Military Family in response to the lack of choice in financial products for members of the armed forces and their families.

Launched in 2015, the mutual now has over 13,000 members and is growing every month.
The mutual specialises in meeting the insurance needs of military people and organisations, as well as those who provide support to the armed forces community or protect our military heritage.

As a Mutual it actively helps those serving, their families and the veteran community. For example, in the last 2 years, The Military Mutual has provided support to over 100 members of the Armed Forces with free legal advice and representation through the Court Martial process. This has saved careers and retained soldiers, sailors and airmen by supporting a fair and level playing field.
